  • 60, born 1 Oct 1949
  • Joined OLSC in August 1985
  • My dad was in the Air Force, so I grew up in Fairfield, CA; Sidi Slimane, Morocco; Roswell, NM; Atwater, CA (9th - 11th grade and first surfing experience); and Lone Tree, IA (after my Dad retired).
  • Atwater and Lone Tree High School, University of Iowa, USN basic training and Hospital Corps School, University of Iowa, USMC Officer Candidate School & Basic School, USN/USMC Flight training, College of Command & Staff at the US Naval War College (Masters).
  • USN and USNR Nov 1968 - August 1976; USMCR Aug 1976 - Apr 1977; USMC Ar 1977 - Jul 2005.
  • I now have a hobby that pays - I fly part time for a charter company in San Diego.
  • I have been married to Cindy since June 19th, 1971.  We have two sons:  Ryan (married with no children in Ridgefield, CN), who was the first junior rep the OLSC board in the mid 90's and Tyler, who is still local (and single) and lives in Solana Beach.  Both are firemen - Ryan in Ridgefield and Tyler in Valley Center - and both are excellent surfers.
  • I tried surfing when I lived in Atwater, but it was 2 1/2 hours to Santa Cruz and I couldn't drive myself there until part way through my junior year!  After flight school when we arrived in sunny SoCal, I decided it was really time to learn ... I've been learning ever since.
  • Regular foot
  • Currently have a Walden Magic 9'6" and 10', and 1964 Gordan & Smith 9'4", a 1993 Encinitas 9'6" and an Aipa 6'8" Stinger.
  • Favorite move is getting up!  Actually I like hard cutbacks (by my standards) and getting to the nose (occasionally).
  • Most surf sessions find me at TerraMar or the North Jetty, but my favorite local spot, when it isn't too crowded, is Church.
  • Favorite spot, again, when the crowds weren't/aren't too crowded would probably be Scorpion Bay with size or Makaha ... Church as a more easily reachable destination.
  • Dream Surf Trip - I think I'm too old for that.  I do enjoy our trips to the bay and I have been to Fiji and we get to Hawaii just about every year, I guess my dream surf trip at this point would be any place I get to that is a peeling right at 4-6 feet with no crowd and warm water!
  • Finished 3rd in the All Military Surfing Championships, Master's division (over 35) at Church in 1988 (in the shortboard no less).
  • Original "Endless Summer" has to still be the standard.
  • Best food after surf is still a Rooster Burger and cold beer followed closely by an Alberto's Carne Asada Burrito.
  • See ya at the next meeting or in the water!
