Robert--Rita-Gray-6Robert Gray
Nov. 23, 1943 - Sept. 18, 2010

Robert moved to Oceanside from New York City in 1953 and fell in love with the Pacific Ocean and surfing, which he avidly pursued in his early teenage years and beyond.  He took a break from the sport in his thirties, but returned to it in earnest in the mid 1980's when his new bride Rita surprised him with a Takayama longboard, decorated with a Snappy Tom logo and first owned by charter OLSC member Kenny Stocks.

For several weeks Robert practiced at Old Man's Beach in San Onofre with Rita snapping photos of his return to the sport.  After he started surfing regularly with his tutor, Larry Hughes, he joined the OLSC, and he and Rita enjoyed the many club contests and activities.  Even though he didn't surf much in his last years, he loved to buy surfing books, magazines, CD's, and to visit the California Surf Museum, of which he was a member.  He never tired of talking to his surf pals about the good old times.

Even though lung cancer took his health from Robert, his spirit never left the ocean that he loved so much.  His ashes were scattered in the deep blue Pacific.

venuPicWith the arrival of summer in Oceanside, we are reminded that the Oceanside Longboard Surfing Club's annual Coalition surf contest is right around the corner.  As a celebration of summer days at the beach with friends and family, we will be hosting our 27th Annual Longboard Surf Contest and Festival August 12 – 14th.

As an added surfing experience, this event has been combined with the 11th Annual Guy Takayama Pro Noseriding  surfing contest.  As in years past, this year’s event promises to provide the public with a wide variety of activities that the whole family can enjoy and an opportunity for sponsors and vendors to promote your products or services.  This is also a call to action to all Club Members to get ready to help out in any way, shape or form to help make this contest as successful as it can possibly be.

Some of California's and Hawaii's most influential longboard surfers have been attracted to the Oceanside Contest over its 26 year history and this year will be no different. Professional and amateur surfers from Santa Cruz to Coronado will compete for bragging rights in the Coalition of Surfing Clubs portion of the event and for some cash in the 10th Annual Guy Takayama Pro Noseriding Contest.

In the Band Shell area, just a few paces from the beach, vendors will display merchandise and sell products or services to the contest spectators as well as the high volume of casual beachgoers. If you have participated with us in the past then you know what a terrific venue the Band Shell area is. Located adjacent to the pier and beach contest site, the venue attracts visitors to both the beach and pier. With ample space to set up display booths, musicians providing jamming musical entertainment, food and drink available close by; products receive the exposure they deserve in a uniquely southern California atmosphere.

Our event will be publicized in local newspapers, online, on the radio and through the California network of participating surf clubs. Additionally, if you choose to be an event sponsor, your business can advertise in the contest program available to all competitors and the public. Your contribution to this event will be used to assist with funding local middle and high school surfing programs and the California Surf Museum.

Don’t miss this opportunity to be part of a unique southern California event at a popular venue - the Oceanside Pier, which is frequented by surfers and their families, beachgoers and tourists taking in the California beach culture and lifestyle during the peak of the summer season.

oliviaOlivia Merlino snatches 2nd place in Girls Longboard at the ISF State Finals in Oceanside this weekend 4/25/2010.

Surfing against some of the states best surfers, and battling for waves in a back and forth fight to the finish.  After getting a questionable third place finish in the semi-finals heat, Olivia did not lose hope and rallied back in the repacharge taking first to advance to the finals.

Once in the finals, Olivia (livers) went outside and took a chance on waiting rather than taking the small inside waves.  Olivia managed to snag three huge outside set waves and rode them to her final 2nd place finish.

Olivia now an 8th grader at BAMS will be missed next year in the ISF BAMS league of surfers, but will be most likely joining the girls longboard division at San Clemente High School.

Good Luck in the future Olivia, Surf on!
